As
an art therapist, I believe in the power of using art in the healing
process.
Art therapy
provides an opportunity for an individual to express themselves in
a
non-traditional way. Art
mediums such as clay, painting, beading, sculpture, doll-making,
printing, masks, sewing, photography and book-making are only
a few
creative ideas that can be explored during the art therapy process.
Art Therapy goals such as developing coping skills, increasing
self-expression, identifying feelings, introducing relaxation and
calming techniques and developing a positive self-esteem are only some
examples of how art therapy can help an individual achieve success.
I believe in creating a supportive environment that provides
safety and containment. Using
a blend of psychological theories that best fit the client’s needs is
imperative. I think of myself as a facilitator or a guide in a
person’s journey towards health. The
process of creating is what is important; therefore anyone is able to
participate in the art therapy process.
I
have had over 8 years of experience working as an art therapist for
children and adolescents that have mild to severe emotional difficulties
as well as 3 years of experience working with children who have life
threatening medical conditions. I
have developed 3 art therapy programs within the twin cities metro area.
These programs continue to use art therapy as a resource for
their children and families today.
I
have received my Masters Degree in Art Therapy and am a Registered Art
Therapist that is Board Certified through the American Art Therapy
Association. Also, I have
received my License in MN to be a professional counselor through the MN
Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.
