January
Midwest Arts in Healthcare Network
(MAIHN) meeting on Thursday, January
19, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Our meeting this month will be hosted by
Gilda's Club Twin Cities. Please invite your friends and colleagues
to attend! You do not need to be a member of MAIHN to join us for
this meeting.
Michelle Silverman, Executive Director of
Gilda's Club Twin Cities, will be our presenter. For those
unfamiliar with Gilda's Club (which is a part of the non-profit
organization Cancer Support Community), following is a brief description
from their website:
Gilda Radner, a comedienne best known for
her years on Saturday Night Live, died from cancer in 1989. In 1991, her
family and friends created the first Gilda’s Club in New York City to
honor her wish that no one face cancer alone. The “Clubhouse” is now
part of Gilda’s legacy, a warm and welcoming place where men, women,
adults, teens, and children share their hopes, fears, wisdom, and
information." The mission of the Cancer Support Community is to
ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge,
strengthened by action, and sustained by community. The Cancer Support
Community is leading the way in empowering people affected by cancer. By
addressing their individual needs, linking them to a community of
support, and helping them to live better lives, we are advancing the
central idea of the Institute of Medicine report "Cancer Care for
the Whole Patient": that social and emotional support are as
important as medical care in the face of a cancer diagnosis.
Michelle's presentation--"Imagine a
Place Where No One Faces Cancer Alone"--will discuss the services
to be offered by Gilda's Club when it opens in early summer of 2012.
Among the many services to be offered will be art and art therapy for
children, teens and adults.
Because the Club is not yet in its new location, our meeting will be
held at the meeting room at the Edina Community Library (5280
Grandview Square, Edina; 612.543.6325). Although our meetings
usually begin at 10:00 a.m., this month's meeting will begin at 10:30
a.m. as the library does not open until 10:00 a.m. and we will need
some time to get set up. As usual, the "business"
portion of the MAIHN meeting will begin after the presentation.
Meeting information is also posted in the Events section on MAIHN's website.
We look forward to seeing you!
