MNATA President
Tracy Mclachlan MS, ATR

Dear fellow art therapy supporters,

I was happy to sit down with 15 other interested parties and take part in the Soul Collage workshop with Joan Ungar and Kathleen Grittner.  I was intrigued by the process and feel that it will be useful in different forms for all participants.  Thank you, Joan and Kathleen.

Although the weather is delightful, the color of the leaves is telling me it is fall.  We are deep in the season of new schoolwork, new routines, fresh art supplies, and new goals.  I have been thinking about some goals for MNATA for the next several months, and hope you can join me for the fall meetings.  The October meeting is a week LATER than usual, as the Adler Graduate School is closed for Yom Kippur.

Our fall meeting are going to be October 15 and November 12, at Adler in the gallery from 10-11:30 am.
In October we will hear from Melina Weir on the trip to the national conference in Washington DC in July.  We are looking for leadership and that will be a continuing discussion.  I hope to plan a time for our holiday gathering, and perhaps a theme. Childcare could be offered at the October meeting if you could contact me ahead of time, perhaps by October 12.  Let's take out our supplies and enjoy some time for free art work as we talk.

Joan was kind enough to offer to host us at her studio for a follow up Soul Collage activity for our January meeting.  If you haven't seen her studio, that alone should draw you up to NE Minneapolis for the meeting January 14.

In closing, many thanks to Nancy Ward for your gracious hospitality for a patio gathering in August.  It is a joy to hear reports of positions, international dialogue, and interest in the art therapy field.

Minutes from our October 15th meeting below

Sincerely.

MNATA 10/15/11 Meeting
submitted by Nancy
Tracy McLachlan, Melina Weir, Nancy Ward, Amy DiGennaro, Bevie LaBrie, Paula Christiansen, Erin Dolan, Bonnie Brabson, Connie Cohen, Jackie Seavey, Marisha Weine, Analiese Hanson, Tami Swiggum

Goals/Needs/Interests:
  • Getting work as an art therapist.
  • art making/food for individual practice, resources and community,
  • connect faces and names in AT field, experientials, AT with youth
  • wants to be able to attend other meetings, noon-1pm lunch works
  • Service opportunities, community volunteering, collaborating, social networking
  • bring AT into neighborhoods where people can’t afford therapy
  • community building and networking really important, help from seasoned ATs
  • Events that bring professionals and students, which provide CEUs
  • Tech workshop could be very useful for new and older ATs, applications in the field.
  • We need to re-establish connection in a more regular way with the Adler Student group.
  • art therapy supply boxes and volunteers to be sent in crisis situations, ie the N Mpls tornado, Red Lake, etc
  • snow-based art making, ie at St Paul Winter Festival
Melina: We need to have more openings for art therapists career wise.
This requires networking nonstop, grantwriting, making your career position needed, working w/ teachers, in schools, with EBD and DD individuals, counselors
She also recommends attending conferences

Meeting dates:
Adler registers for 3 months, but only 2 weeks ahead of semester. Classes vary between Saturdays and Sundays. This makes it hard to schedule consistent meetings and get regular attendance and participation. It is hard for students to plan ahead also.
NOON MEETINGS MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND, EVEN IF ONLY FOR 30 MIN and provide childcare when class is not in session. RSVPs would be needed to make this happen.

Membership:
Priority: develop student membership and activity by having meetings at Adler at lunch
How is this different from the Student Art Therapy Assn? We need to contact them
Melina described the way she broke the membership list into catagories of “types” of members. She expressed a desire to have some representation of each of those groups. Membership in AATA is required for all board members, and having an MA in AT is required for pres and VP roles.

Melina-AATA Conference
Erin Dolan wants to go next year as delegate. Tami is also interested.
2011 AATA Conference focused on Collective energy, collaboration, schools, VA, Substance Abuse and Mental Health  Admin

MNATA needs to have general professional liability insurance for the board. Nancy will find out about this insurance before the November meeting They also want similar look to for all the state orgs to create a more cohesive appearance. The Brand (logo) could be plugged in.

AATA wants us to communicate thru the “Glass Cube”. We need to learn more about this. They have toolkits about different applications-schools, vets, etc. They are on the AATA website.
They had a section on national advocacy.
The Chapter Update that AATA offers may be useful info for others than the chapter reps. This could be added as a tab on our MNATA website.

Nancy will develop a script in the next week for calling members and pass it to the board for feedback. Then we can break the list into groups of 10 to call, for personal contact before the Nov mtg.
We will find out what the schedule is so we know when to schedule the holiday gathering.

We have about $1000 in savings. We spent about $300 for soul collage. Most attenders joined to reduce their costs.
Tami will take on Programming Chair role
Nancy will continue as Communications Link

As a way of increasing engagement and spreading responsibility Tracy proposes expanding the roles within meetings. For example, everyone is a member of the “Body of the Whole” who brings forward many more of the skills than typically arrive at meetings. We need a different leadership form than the traditional one.

PAINT AWAY YOUR PAIN
Measuring and characterizing pain so that it can be understood and treated is a real challenge in the medical world, with even the most sophisticated facilities and physicians resorting to simplistic scales using numbers and happy/sad faces to quantify the intensity of a particular patient's experience.
