As you know the 2018 Super Bowl will be in our state! This is exciting, but there is unfortunately an increase of sex trafficking during the Super Bowl time and many youth are exploited and at risk. This presents a need for a safe place on the streets for youth during this Super Bowl season.
The Civil Society, which is a MN organization that offers legal services to victims of sexual assault and/or human trafficking, is organizing an event for youth on the day of the Super Bowl, February 4. The event is called the Super Bowl Safety Party for Youth at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. At this event there will be food, drinks, creative arts and writing activities, music, survivor art gallery, and more! The purpose of this event is to provide a safe and alternative place for youth to hang out on the day of the Super Bowl. I am reaching out to you all specifically because we need volunteers to help with the art workshop of this event. I have volunteered to be the Director of the art activities and am assisting Civil Society to find volunteers for the creative areas of this event. The intention is not "art therapy" specifically but I think it would be neat to gather a team of art therapists to help because of our awareness of how people create art and how to safely work with the youth that come over to the art area. One corner of the large room of the Cedar Cultural Center will be devoted to art making. Volunteer shifts for the day of this event, February 4, are 2 hour commitments ranging from the hours of 1:00-10:00 PM. I will be there the entire event and am open to any creative ideas people may have to offer the youth that attend. Other volunteer opportunities are also available such as greeting, passing out food, engaging with youth that attend, etc. so spread the word if you know of anyone that might be interested in volunteering in any capacity! Thank you for your consideration! If this would be something that you would like to explore further, feel free to email me at lauriepegwende@gmail.com and we can go from there. You can also contact the Civil Society main office at 651-291-0713 for more info. |
